Establishing the Parkville Historic Society
Oct 23, 2026 12:00 PM
Dean Katerndahl has been mayor of Parkville for a little over 4 years. Prior to that he was chair of the Parkville Planning Commission for about 14 years. Prior to retirement he worked for the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) working with city and county managers on cooperative projects throughout the region. Dean and his wife, Marcia, have lived in Parkville on Main St since 2005. They have a son, Casey, who is a cancer research scientist at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
About a year ago Dean and Professor Tim Westcott of Park University, invited a number of individuals and organizations to meet to explore establishing a Parkville Historic Society. They are still in the formative stage, but have developed a website (parkvillehistory.org) and are slowly working on several initiatives, including becoming a more formal organization. Dean will bring us up to date on their work and introduce us to the website.

![]() History of Veterans Day
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. |

Step Up and Stand Up
Nov 20, 2026 12:00 PM
Step Up and Stand Up--Helping young girls and boys find their voice, stand up safely, and grow with confidence. This program is part of District 6040’s Peace and Conflict Resolution area of service. Melynn Sight, a fellow Rotarian and retired communications and strategy professional has put her skills to work helping young people build leadership skills.
Melynn developed Step Up for girls and Stand Up for boys to help students recognize bullying, think about their choices when they see bullying happen, and how to move from being a bystander to being an up stander. She has facilitated the Antibullying programs for 12 years, guiding students through conversations about friendship, role models, respect, and self-confidence to be able to step up safely in a bullying situation. Melynn will share what Step Up can mean for students—and how our Rotary club might help bring the program to a school in our community. |

![]() On October 3, 1789, President George Washington issued a proclamation naming Thursday, November 26, 1789, as an official holiday of "sincere and humble thanks." The nation then celebrated its first Thanksgiving under its new Constitution. On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln made the traditional Thanksgiving celebration a nationwide holiday to be commemorated each year on the fourth Thursday of November. In the midst of a bloody Civil War, President Lincoln issued a Presidential Proclamation in which he enumerated the blessings of the American people and called upon his countrymen to "set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise."

![]() New Year's Day became a Federal Holdiay in 1870
On January 1, 1801, the first public reception was held in the President's House, and a democratic social custom began. From 1801 until its end in 1932, the New Year's Reception at the White House was a tradition met with anticipation by diplomats, government officials, military officers, and the public alike. Everyone from the common citizen to the highest-ranking diplomat was welcomed. By the early 20th century, crowds swelled to more than 6,000, and a line on the sidewalk outside the White House snaked out beyond the gates and around the block bordering the old State, War, and Navy building (now known as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building).

The Parkville Rotary Club was formed March 26th, 1946 under the sponsorship of the Kansas City Club. Parkville Rotary has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Park University. All Park College/University presidents have been members of the Parkville Rotary Club. The University is also home to the Rotary Clubs Archive and Museum. Our club has completed numerous years of service in Rotary International District 6040 in serving Parkville and communities across the world. Our deepest appreciation goes to the original founding members and to all those who have served and are currently serving.
